Cedar Valley Trail – Cedar Rapids
- 7 miles long and 10 feet wide
- Constructed of hot-mix asphalt with recycled materials (9% RAP & 4% RAS)
- Two 500 ft. sections were constructed of Porous HMA
- 8,500 tons of total mix
- Took 18 days to complete
Fun Fact: The biggest challenge was backing our dump trucks back to the paver. Remember that the trail is only 10 feet wide, which means we had to back in one truck at a time! The only access points (where are trucks could reach the trail to back up into) were at least one mile apart. This was one of our more challenging projects and received press because of that. The owner wanted a 7800 SY addition to an 8400 SY existing parking lot. The 8400 SY lot was placed 2 years ago with a 3” base and this year we placed the 2” HMA surface. The 7800 SY lot constructed this year consisted of 2000 LF of curb and gutter and 2200 TON of HMA pavement it also included approx 1500 CY of excavation. The 8400 SY Lot consisted of 950 Tons of a 2” HMA surface. After the surface layer was complete on both lots we striped 11,200 LF of pavement markings for parking stalls.
To eliminate standing water in the University of Iowa Women’s softball batting cages, we chose to go with a clean stone and 4” of open drainage layer (popcorn mix) asphalt. This allowed the water to drain through the artificial grass then through the porous asphalt and out a tile system. The end result was new batting cages with asphalt that prevented standing water.
